Sony Xperia XZ3 Release Date, Price and Spec Rumours
Much like OnePlus, Sony tends to update its flagship phone every six months. The current high-end model is the Xperia XZ2, with an XZ2 Premium on the way.
That means there’s an Xperia XZ3 on the horizon that’ll be on sale sooner than you might think. Here’s what we know about Sony’s next attempt to capture a larger part of the high-end Android market.
When is the next Sony phone coming out?
The Xperia XZ3 is not yet official but Sony has a press conference at the IFA trade show in Berlin on 30 August.
This could well be an event at which Sony unveils the Xperia XZ3, particularly as the yet-to-be-released XZ2 Premium will not be globally available.
How much will the Sony Xperia XZ3 cost?
It’s likely that the XZ3 will end up costing more than the XZ2. High-end phone prices continue to creep up and the XZ2 is the most expensive Sony phone ever at £699.
We expect the Xperia XZ3 will retail for around £749 in the UK - meaning in the US it could push the $900 mark. This price is a huge ask for a Sony device in such a competitive market.
There's no firm news yet on a potential Xperia XZ3 Compact.
When we reviewed the Xperia XZ2 we liked the updated design, but also lamented its thickness and the poor camera quality compared to the leaps made by the likes of the Pixel 2 and iPhone X.
The XZ2 was the first Sony phone with an 18:9 display and so it was odd that the XZ2 Premium reverted to a 16:9 display.
A leaked spec sheet suggests that the XZ3 will keep the taller display, as well as the Snapdragon 845 of the XZ2. In fact, the specs are incredibly similar to the XZ2 including the GPU, screen size and resolution and storage and RAM.
All that differs noticeably is the slightly larger battery capacity (3240mAh up from 3180) and a slimmer body (10.1mm instead of the XZ2’s 11.1) and dual cameras - adding a 12Mp sensor to the XZ2’s solo 19Mp lens.
Again, it’s odd that Sony announced the XZ2 Premium with a better camera set up right after the XZ2 but hey, this is Sony, no one knows what’s going on over there.
An XZ3 with dual cameras makes sense, but so soon after the XZ2 could leave us with a phone that’s barely different and more importantly barely improved. Plus if you've just got an XZ2, how annoyed are you going to be?
At least it seems that Sony is steering well clear of the trend for notches on Android phones in 2018.

Here’s that full leaked spec sheet in full:
We’re still holding out for Sony to change the design language again to something more eye catching and ergonomic, but given it took years to get rid of the bezels of its phones, it’s probably going to stick with the design of the XZ2 when we see the XZ3.
